Donna Belt Special Exhibit
Children of the World
April 6, 2012
6-9pm

My art has always served as a means to discernment.  After my mother died a few years ago, I noticed an attraction to the innocent knowing in children’s faces. They called to me from the New York Times magazine, from a Global Fund for Children book called Faith (celebrating children of different religious traditions), and from the compelling photography of Steve McCurry (Steve McCurry. Portraits. London: Phaidon Press Ltd, 1999). Each day in my studio, I would clip a fresh piece of paper onto my easel and then allow a face to come forward. I would begin my drawing by looking at the paper only occasionally, allowing distortions to express themselves. Standing back, I would find eyes uneven, hands too big, heads outsized.

The expressive arts therapist, Shaun McNiff  says that our art pieces, once finished, become angels or messengers (Pat B Allen. Art Is a Spiritual Path. Boston: Shambhala Publications, 2005). I felt this to be true, looking at these children.
Each of these children invited me to feel complete in my own sensing, confident in my own path to grieving. I look at these portraits now and recognize a child who connects to inner knowing through prayer, and another who finds peace in surrender, just as another expresses her wholeness through defiance. Some find balance through non-attachment, while others find their grounding in the working of the earth.

There are as many perfect journeys as there are people.

I invite viewers to contemplate the knowing they are called to as they view these children, recognizing them as mirrors to their own wisdom and healing.

CBA artists Re-imagining Blu

October 7th

Spend First Friday in October at The Carter Building in downtown Raleigh, where more than 50 artists have put together a special exhibition with the theme “Re-Imagining Blue.”

From 6 to 9 p.m. on October 7, you'll see the many things blue symbolizes in our culture as the artists have created work that explores these nuances. There will be music, art, painting demos and even a chance for kids to make New Orleans style blue masks from recycled material.

While at The Carter Building, take advantage of a special “blue tag” sale throughout the building. Any piece of art with a blue tag will be under $200!

In the triangle.com First Friday tradition, the artwork will be paired with some great food from local restaurants. The Diner and The Oxford will have sample menu items for you to taste.

Don’t miss other activities taking place during the event like the wine and chocolate tasting at The Wine Feed and the live body-painting exhibition at Pitch Media Gallery by Dan Sargent.

It wouldn’t be a triangle.com event without giveaways! The Downtown Raleigh Alliance will give away one piece of art if their First Friday Facebook page receives 1,500 fans by October 7. The DRA will give away a second piece of art if the total surpasses 1,750 fans!

Also, win gift certificates to participating restaurants when you play triangle.com's cornhole game!

Please register above to be eligible for the Downtown Raleigh Alliance artwork giveaway and other prizes. See you on First Friday!
